Boeing’s 747 is one the most recognizable planes to take to the skies with its iconic hump, four engines, extensive landing gear and sheer size. Since its first commercial flight in 1970, Boeing’s 747 jumbo jet has flown more than 3.5 billion passengers. But over the last few decades, airlines have looked for more ways to cut costs and to make airplanes more efficient. Two engine jets can now fly near the same capacity and further than older four engine planes like Boeing’s 747 and the Airbus A380. CNBC visited Boeing's Everett, Washington factory to see the last 747 roll off the production line. It will go to Atlas Air for cargo deliveries. CNBC takes a look at how the 747 changed aviation and what’s next for Boeing. The A350 is the bombshell that is going to aid Airbus's ongoing onslaught of whatever remains of Boeing’s integrity in the aviation industry. They’ve finally released their secret weapon which comes with tons of pleasant surprises that will win over a majority of Boeing’s loyal customers. So, how the new Airbus A350 is going to end Boeing’s dominance? The A350 was born at a time when the Airbus was placed under great pressure by its major competitor, Boeing. This story goes back to 2004 when the Airbus A330 family was the rave. It was the model that was bringing in the money for Airbus. Just then, Boeing turned the tide and introduced the Boeing 787 and the 777 models, majorly wide-body aircraft that could carry between 250-300 passengers. Somehow, this factor drew more passengers away from airlines that relied on the smaller Airbus A330 to airlines that had resorted to using the wider-bodied Boeing 787 for long-haul travel. Boeing was once a name synonymous with innovation and reliability in the aviation industry. But in the last few years, the company has faced a series of devastating tragedies that have left its reputation in tatters. The crashes of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 and Lion Air Flight 610, both involving Boeing 737-MAX aircraft, claimed the lives of 346 people and sparked a global crisis of confidence in the company. As the investigation into these accidents unfolded, it became clear that there was more to these tragedies than just simple mechanical failures. The tragic decline of Boeing is the story of how one of the world's most trusted names in aviation was brought down by greed, cover-ups, and a shocking lack of accountability. From the faulty systems that were deliberately hidden from pilots, to the disturbing revelations about the company's internal culture, this is a story that will leave you stunned and saddened by the tragic decline of an industry giant.
A searing investigation of a once-iconic company and its tragic failures, DOWNFALL: The Case Against Boeing exposes how Wall Street’s influence and Boeing’s crumbling internal culture resulted in two historic plane crashes, 346 fatalities, and a shocking cover-up. Directed and produced by Rory Kennedy. Produced and co-written by Mark Bailey. Executive produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard. 2019 through 2021 was a fairly challenging time for Boeing. The US manufacturer suffered immense reputational damage due to the 737 MAX crisis. Indeed, in many ways, the firm is still dealing with the consequences of this narrowbody program in the form of added regulator scrutiny. However, the past year seemed to be a turning point for the company. Not only did it see numerous large aircraft orders, but it also managed to get the green light to resume 787 Dreamliner production. With these major achievements still somewhat fresh, can Boeing keep the momentum going? And what major bridges will it need to cross this coming year? Boeing CEO David Calhoun and Riyadh Air CEO Tony Douglas join CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” to discuss the massive deal for Boeing to sell 78 Dreamliner planes to two Saudi airlines.
In March 2019 a Boeing 737 MAX crashed shortly after takeoff in Ethiopia, killing all 157 people on board. What went wrong? Did Boeing hush up concerns about the safety of the aircraft? And what role did US aviation regulators play? The crash involving Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 came just four months after a Boeing 737 Max had plunged into the sea in Indonesia killing all 189 passengers and crew. The aircraft was grounded following the second crash and remains so today. The shockwaves reverberated throughout the industry, raising questions about Boeing and the regulatory authorities. Both tragedies have been blamed on faulty software - software that the pilots didn’t even know existed. The documentary shows that malfunctioning software was just a small part of the picture. Instead, it alleges widespread systemic failure and blames market forces for the fatal errors. Did Boeing care more about profit than safety? Could other models produced by the company turn out to be affected? The makers of this investigative report show just how much the production structures of commercial aircraft have to change, if we are to avoid similar crashes in the future. Update November 2020: The FAA has lifted the order suspending 737 operations for airlines. However, it is unlikely that all airlines will carry passengers again before 2021. - DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. #boeing737max #flugzeug #absturz #wdrdoku Ein Film für die Story von Thomas G. Also shown is a civilian version of the same type of Boeing 929 Jetfoil, operating for P&O Ferries. (This is probably the P&O Flying Princess, although it's not clear.) Procured in 1979, the HMS Speedy (P296) was intended to work as a Royal Navy mine-sweeping vessel. The ship was the first of a planned class of twelve. Tests with HMS Speedy were intended to provide the RN with practical experience in the operation and support of a hydrofoil, to establish technical and performance characteristics, and to assess the capability of such a ship not only with the RN but in ancillary service for the Fishery Protection Squadron. After extensive sea trials at Portsmouth were assessed as a failure, the RN lost interest. HMS Speedy was eventually sold into mercantile service in 1986. It remains in operation as a high speed ferry operating between Hong Kong and Macau. Despite the hopes and intentions of aircraft manufacturers, aircraft variants sometimes fall short in terms of sales and orders. Poor sales might be due to an inaccurate assessment of the market by the company, or it might be that a competing planemaker simply offers a better product. Sometimes these factors are combined with poor timing, and an aircraft's development timeline is just a few years - or a decade - later than would have been ideal. So what are some of the less popular airframes developed by Airbus and Boeing? Today we look at a handful of examples. While at Dubai Airshow 2021 I visited the Boeing 777X. This is the first time Boeing has allowed visitors to get onboard the airplane! Let’s find out what the inside of the 777X is like? It is an experimental airplane, with no fancy interiors but a lot of workstations, terminals and water barrel tanks. I spoke with Boeing’s test engineers, pilots and commercial staff on the 777X testing and certification program. Check out the cockpit, folding wingtip, engine and test instruments inside the aircraft. Boeing expects the B777X to complete certification in 2023. Enjoy the flying display of the B777X at the Dubai Airshow.
