This video is an introduction to shear force and bending moment diagrams. What are Shear Forces and Bending Moments? Shear forces and bending moments are resultants which are used to conveniently represent the internal forces that develop within a beam when external loads are acting on it. The internal forces that exist within the beam will depend on how the beam is loaded, and how it is supported. Beams are typically loaded by concentrated forces, distributed forces, and concentrated moments. Typical beam supports include pinned supports, roller supports, and fully fixed supports. How Do We Draw the Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams? Determining shear forces and bending moments along the length of a beam typically involves three steps: - First we draw the free body diagram of our beam. - Next we use the equilibrium equations to calculate the reaction forces and moments. - Finally, we cut our beam at a single location and use the equilibrium equations to determine the shear force and bending moment at that location. In this video we explore bending and shear stresses in beams. A bending moment is the resultant of bending stresses, which are normal stresses acting perpendicular to the beam cross-section. We can easily derive an equation for these bending stresses by observing how a beam deforms for a case of pure bending. This equation is know as the flexure formula. Next we look at shear stresses, which act parallel to the beam cross-section, and can be represented by a shear force. These vertical shear stresses can cause horizontal shear failure in beams, because they result in complementary horizontal shear stresses, which develop to maintain equilibrium. The first batch of the model was sold out during the one weekend, so the buzz around the product is not only created from the thin air. Especially since we've received a flurry of new contacts related to the product throughout the fall. One factor that explains the product's popularity is certainly its compatibility with so many excavators of different sizes, as well as the features related to its use. So in order to be able to better illustrate the operation of the C-model for those who are not familiar with the model, we decided to make a small video of the use of the product. Due to its light but strong structure, the JAK-300C can be used from 6 ton kg up to 25 ton kg (13000-55115 lbs) excavators. Concentrating the cutting force on the side of one clamping jaw also makes the grapple a bit more affordable compared to two-jaw models, although it is almost the same in terms of power. However, the advantages of the C-model can best be seen in its features during actual work. With the grapple, handling wood is very easy, as its design enables the wood to be moved and loaded even when the cutting blade is in place. The efficiency of the work can also be significantly improved with the optional collector, which allows the tree shear to cut and collect several trees at once. The cutting blade below the grapple can also be detached, which turns the grapple into a full-size wood grapple. Detaching and re-installing the blade can also be done easily in a few minutes. What is the shear strength of soil? This is a key question for ground engineers and is vital to any design project. The reason it’s so important is that at some point, everything that is built makes contact with the ground – and transfers load into it. Understanding what influences the strength of a soil and quantifying it, are always the first steps to be taken. Soil strength is used in soil mechanics to describe the force to be overcome in order to fail a soil by shear. Soil strength depends on many elements, one fundamental consideration being the type of soil. The particles of most soils are essentially incompressible, and soil masses have no tensile strength. Soils fail when one block of soil moves relative to another block and the soil particles at the failure plane move over each other. This is what is known as shear. Welcome back MechanicalEI, did you know that unlike normal forces and moments which occur on the outside, shear force and bending moment occur on the inside of a beam? This makes us wonder, what is Shear force and Bending Moment? Before we jump in check out the previous part of this series to learn about what Volumetric Strain is? First, let's grasp the concept of an axial force which acts along the centroidal axis of the member. If the axial force acts through the centroid of the member it is called concentric loading. If the force is not acting through the centroid it's called eccentric loading. Shearing forces are unaligned forces pushing one part of a body in one specific direction, and another part of the body in the opposite direction. When the forces are aligned into each other, they are called compression forces. An example is a deck of cards being pushed one way on the top, and the other at the bottom, causing the cards to slide. A bending moment is the reaction induced in a structural element when an external force or moment is applied to the element causing the element to bend. The most common or simplest structural element subjected to bending moments is the beam. For equilibrium, the moment created by external forces (and external moments) must be balanced by the couple induced by the internal loads. The resultant internal couple is called the bending moment. Hence, we first saw what axial force is, then saw what shear force is and finally went on to see what Bending moment is? The flow-ability of a powder is subject to the aggregate effects of multiple particle properties, interactions and environmental conditions. Shear cell measurements entail applying a range of load stresses to a powder bed and measuring the shear stress at the point of incipient flow for each. From the “yield locus” obtained it is possible to quantify key flowability metrics including cohesion and the angle of internal friction. Cohesion can be thought of as the intrinsic strength of a powder mass resulting from particle interactions. The angle of internal friction is a measure of how the powder mass gains strength with increasing load stress. With the construction of Mohr’s circles onto the yield locus the unconfined yield strength at an associated major principle consolidation stress is obtained. The process is repeated to generate a flow function for the powder, from which the flow function coefficient at a given consolidating stress can be referenced against established categories of flowability. These metrics make for a useful starting point in understanding and predicting powder handling behaviour when used in conjunction with metrics from complimentary powder characterisation techniques.
